Now, Will The Real John Hutchinson, of Bucks County, Pennsylvania,
Who DOES Connect To Thomas "The Proprietor" & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson
Please Identify Himself
So, now the quest was to find an Isaac Hutchinson in Bucks County, Pa. that would fit the only known surviving male child, Isaac, of Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson, of what was then described as "Hopewell, Burlington Co, NJ. And, that is what I have been trying to do for many years. Finally, in 2004, I came by accident in a "Google" upon a "Stor" Hutchinson of Harrison Co, Ohio, who was born in Bucks Co, Pa. The name of "Stor" is NOT COMMON and I immediately knew he had to be from the "Proprietor" line of New Jersey. If you put that together with the Thomas, Isaac, Maramaduke Hutchinson found guilty of High Treason in PA in 1778 during the Revolution, and then finding some of these same individuals in New Brunswick, Canada, you have to conclude that the Thomas Hutchinson/Dorothy Storr male lines still survive.
This is an analysis of what we know based upon existing New Jersey & Pennsylvania documents and other circumstantial evidence. In 2004, I found a "Stor Hutchinson," born November 1779, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who had migrated to Ohio and had lived in Harrison County, Ohio. He was Quaker and had married in Bucks County, PA, Jemima Moore, on 10 February 1808. Both he and Jemima were from Solebury Township, Bucks Co., PA. Stor died on 11 August 1859 in Colerain Township, Belmont County, Ohio and both he and his wife are buried in the Hicksite Quaker Cemetery, Harrisville, Harrison County, Ohio. It is certainly obvious to me that he descends from Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson based upon his place of birth, the date of his birth, and most importantly, his given name of "Stor." Therefore, I began a search for his parents in Bucks County, PA.
I began examining the Bucks County, PA records - Wills, Orphan's Court records, Deeds, and the Miscellaneous Docket records, with the following information being found:
1. Joseph Watkins of Guernsey Co, OH gives power of
attorney to Stove(?) [probably Stor] Hutchinson of Harrison Co, OH,
to recover estate from William Large and John K. Balderston,
executors of Joseph Watkins, who was brother to Joseph's late father
James Watkins. Book 6, page 170, March 5, 1831.
[Misc. Dockets]
2. Ann Gaddis of Harrison Co, OH, widow of John Gaddis, late
of Plumstead Twp, [Bucks Co] gives power of attorney to Stow(?)
[probably Stor] Hutchinson of Harrison Co to recover money from
Joseph Hough. Book 7, Page 512, March 2, 1838. [Misc. Dockets]
3. In Bucks Co, PA, Will - #9025, Book 13, page 408 -
Elizabeth Hutchinson , of Solebury Township left a will dated May
16, 1851 and was proved on Sept 13, 1851. In it she mentions - Niece
Ada Lewis. Brother Stor Hutchinson. Brother Isaac's daughters
- Letitia Hambleton, Mercy Kirk, Dorathea Roszell, Mary Lattimore,
Phebe Hutchinson, Hannah Hough. To Belinda, youngest child of niece
Letitia Hambleton. Executor - friend John D. Balderston. Witnesses -
Amos Armitage and Jacob Armitage.
4. I then found a Will, in Bucks County, PA, for a John Hutchinson of Solebury Township, Bucks Co, PA, who made a will, Vol 9, Page 274, dated 1 January 1818, wherein John was described as being from Solebury Twp., Bucks County, PA. The will was proved on 3 June 1818. In it he names: Phebe, wife; sons - Isaac & John as executors; and Phebe is to "live in the house with her two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah." Now, this implies to me the possibility of a previous marriage or at least that these two children may not be his. The will also names, probably grandchildren, but just names them as Jonathan Pearson's three children- Hannah, Cyrus and Adah. The witnesses were - David McCray and Joseph Carey. [Is this the Adah Lewis with other Pearsons mentioned in the Misc. Dockets? Adah and Hannah and Hiram were children of Jonathan Pearson, of Solebury Twp, Bucks Co, who made a will dated 9 June 1831, and proved 20 July, 1831 - #6188 - Book 10, Page 895]
5. Immediately following the John Hutchinson's will above,
is an Agreement of the Heirs of John Hutchinson, Vol 9-
Page 276, listing the names of those heirs; viz. Isaac, John,
Elizabeth, Sarah Stor and Joseph Hutchinson, for the division of
the estate. [Note- I know there was a sister Sarah. Therefore, I
am convinced that the name is NOT Sarah Stor, and SHOULD BE two
children "Sarah, Stor" being there was a Stor Hutchinson.]
6. Birth date info from the IGI for the John Hutchinson,
who died in 1818, above, gives his birth as 26 March 1732.
7. New Jersey records show that the ONLY KNOWN heir of
Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson to survive was their child, John
Hutchinson, who married Joyce Venables -see above]. [Thomas left
no Will. He was described as Thomas Hutchinson, of Hutchinson Manor,
late deceased. George Hutcheson/Hutchinson, another of the
Proprietors, was the Administrator of Thomas' estate and gave an
accounting of the estate along with Mahlon Stacy on 21 February
1695/6.] John Hutchinson, son of Thomas & Dorothy
Hutchinson, left a Will dated April 10, 1704 which was proved on
June 6, 1704. His Executor was Thomas Lambert, of Nottingham,
yeoman. Unrecorded Will - Vol 1-P 261- Burlington- "John Hutchinson,
of Hopewell, in the County of Burlington, yeoman... " He signed his
Will as HUTCHISON. Roger Parke, Andrew Heath, and William Emley, Sr
were witnesses. The Will was probated in Hopewell, Burlington, New
Jersey.
After John's death, in the Register of St. Mary's (P.E.) Church,
Burlington, NJ, is the following entry made by Rev John Talbot,
Rector in 27 September 1705: "Hopewell Chappel Church - Marmaduke,
Isaac, and Eliz: Hutchinson John, Andrew Eliz: & and Sarah
Heath, & Joseph Tyndall [Tindall], Baptized 7 bris 27." [St. Mary's
Church Register] The first three of these were the children of John
and Joyce Hutchinson. The Hopewell Chappel Church was the scene of
these baptisms. The ONLY KNOWN MALE child of John & Joyce
Venables Hutchinson to survive was Isaac Hutchinson.
When doing research, statistics have shown that the average age of a male at marriage in that period was 25-26 years old. Using that average, would put this Isaac's (son of John & Joyce) birth date at abt 1702-3. Again, this fits for only Isaac Hutchinson, the son of John and Joyce (Venables) Hutchinson, Quaker, and grandson of Thomas the proprietor - Quaker. Isaac's father John, died in NJ, with a Will, in 1704. This son, Isaac, is also identified in numerous NJ deeds when selling land that he inherited. in the deeds, it would state in the chain of the title that he was the son of John, who was the son of Thomas, the proprietor. So, NJ deeds confirm Isaac, lived as does his father's Will. Isaac also migrated from NJ into Bucks Co, Pa, after his 1728 marriage. It has always been believed that Isaac married (Quaker) twice with second wife being Phebe Ward.

9. After his brother Marmaduke died, Isaac was the last
"known" representative found to carry the name and estate of his
grandfather, Thomas, "the proprietor". In 1727, he was described as
"Isaac Hutchinson, of Trenton, in the county of Hunterdon,
gentleman..." On 30 August 1733, in a deed, he was described as "of
the township of Trenton, in the county of Hunterdon, yeoman",
with his wife Mary, when he sold 311 acres in Trenton "reserving
one rod square of land in the graveyard on the hill, and two acres
belonging to the church" which descended to him through his father's
Will and through land from Marmaduke as heir. Isaac was disposing of
the manor lands from this time until the last parcel was sold on 7
March 1749. He is not heard of again and Charles Robbins Hutchinson
believes that he moved to Pa. He also mentions that a Isaac married
a Phebe Ward (both of Trenton) in Chesterfield Meeting in 1740 and
says that it may be the same Isaac Hutchinson. The Isaac & Mary
Allison info also comes from a Joseph Heston, Jr, Phoenix, Ariz.
[Zebulon Heston married Dorothy Hutchinson, daughter of John &
Dorothy (Storr) Htchinson.]
In the Hunterdon Co Historical Society, they have two deeds -
(1)John Reading, Amwell Twp to John Youngblood, Amwell Twp, 30 April
1751, purchased by Reading 17 April 1750 from Isaac Hutchinson,
unsold property of father John and grandfather Thomas of Burlington
(2) John Reading, Amwell Twp to Philip Calvin, Amwell Twp, land in
Amwell Twp, 7 April 1751, part of tract Reading bought from Isaac
Hutchinson devisee of John Hutchinson and grandfather, Thomas
Hutchinson. In these deeds, Isaac was called a Yeoman from Hunterdon
County when he had sold some of the land to Reading on 7 April 1750.
10. As has been stated, it has been suggested that this Isaac who married (1) Mary Alloson is the same Isaac who married (2) Phebe Ward. The children from this first marriage to Mary, come from a listing found in the notes of Charles C. Gardner's collection-"Genealogical Dictionary of New Jersey," found in Alexander Library, Rutgers University. The names of these children listed were: Dorothy, Thomas, Elizabeth, John, Isaac, Sarah. These same six children were also given to me by a Jack Hutchinson of Leawood, KS, who claims descent from Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson, and is currently (2004) awaiting his DNA results.
11. If you accept the birth date of John Hutchinson, who died in 1818, with a date from the IGI of 26 March 1732, he does fit as the son of Isaac and Mary (Allison), who were married 28 July 1728. It is my position that the John Hutchinson, son of Isaac & Mary (Alloson) Hutchinson, is the John Hutchinson of Solebury Twp, Bucks County, PA, who left a will dated January 1818 and who died between January and May of 1818, when the will was proved, and who in that will named his wife as Phebe and named two sons as executors - Isaac & John.
And, based on the above, I submit this descendant line from Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson:
12. This line and their families are further substantiated by the following items from the Miscellaneous Dockets filed in Bucks County:
8 April 1852 - John D. Balderston, Administrator of Isaac Hutchinson, late of Bucks Co, and Stor Hutchinson of Harrison Co, OH, acknowledge payment by Samuel G. Watson, current owner of land now adjudged to Elizabeth Hutchinson, of their share in estate of Sarah Hutchinson. [Misc. Dockets - Book 11, Page 319]
17 Mar 1853 - Samuel G. Watson of Solebury Twp. purchased land of Samuel Beans subject to payment to Hannah Pearson and Samuel and Ada Lewis, after the death of Elizabeth Hutchinson, who is now deceased. Hannah Pearson is now deceased and Hiram H. Pearson is her executor. Hiram H. Pearson (also attorney for Samuel and Ad P. Lewis) acknowledges payment by Samuel G. Watson. [Misc. Dockets - Book 11, Page 319]
6 April 1853 - Jacob Wilson purchased land from the estate of Isaac Hutchinson, subject to dower for widow Sarah, who died August 14, 1853. Letitia Hamilton[Hambleton], Dorothy (Hutchinson) Rozel, Joseph Hutchinson (by attorney Amos Walton), John W. and Mary (Hutchinson) Lattimore (by attorney Amos Armitage), Phebe (Hutchinson) Walton, William and Mercy (Hutchinson) Kirk, John Hutchinson (by attorney Amos Walton), Olive [Oliver] and Hannah (Hutchinson) Hough and John E. Kenderine (administrator of Elias Hutchinson, heirs of Isaac Hutchinson, acknowledge payment of dower by Jacob Wilson. [Misc. Dockets - Book 11, Page 335]
There are many other items in the Miscellaneous Dockets that allow me to build the family of John & Phebe Hutchinson but these are the main entries for this argument. From these alone, we know that there was an Isaac Hutchinson, with a wife, Sarah, and the heirs listed above are most likely their children. And, the other entry, shows us that
this Isaac Hutchinson had a brother, Stor Hutchinson, and was identified in the will of John Hutchinson, deceased in 1818, stated above, and was listed in the Agreement of Heirs that followed John's Will of 1818.13. Using the Census Records of Solebury Township, Bucks County, PA, we find that in 1830, Isaac Hutchinson, son of John, who died in 1818, was there with two sons and three daughters, and he was aged between 60-70, as was his wife, and John D. Balderston was living a few doors from him. In 1840, Isaac was still living but still listed as 60-70[?], and an Elizabeth Hutchinson was there at age 70-80 and a female was living with her, aged 40-50. In the 1850 Census, Isaac is not found, implying that he died and fitting into the entries in the Bucks County Miscellaneous Docket. And, there is a Sarah Hutchinson, aged 81, born in PA and an Elizabeth Hutchinson, 89, born in NJ, living with Phebe Hutchinson, age 46, born in PA, and Dorothy Rozell, 53, born in PA. [Which puts makes of their ages fit into the above scenario and in the right time frame.
Also found in the 1850 Census was Mercy Kirk, daughter of Isaac, aged 48, with husband William Kirk, aged 61, and son Charles, aged 21, living in Buckingham, Bucks Co, PA.
14. Further support for my position that Stor Hutchinson of Harrison County, Ohio is descended from the line of Thomas Hutchinson, "The Proprietor," of New Jersey, is also found in the Bucks County, PA documents. If you trace out the descendants of those named as heirs of Isaac and Sarah Hutchinson in the Bucks County, PA Miscellaneous Dockets, you can find the continued use of the "Storr "and "Maraduke" names as given names within the family lines from Isaac Hutchinson, son of John, and the brother of "Stor Hutchinson" of Harrison County, Ohio.
The use of "Stor" as a given name is significant and is,in my opinion, an obvious indication of a relationship to Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson line. And, when the given name of "Marmaduke" is found in these lines, it is equally important because it is the name of a deceased son of Thomas & Dorothy (Storr) Hutchinson, who had been named after Dorothy Storr's father, Marmaduke Storr, of England
